Results Show Kids are Financially-aware, Career-conscious and Family-oriented
* Almost 8 out of 10 kids save money for the future or to buy something special
*
They love learning how to do different jobs; 82% reported that they
could see a future career for themselves in their favourite role-play
experience
* Over a third said they value family time over material goods
The KidZania Bi-Annual KidZ Survey, commissioned
by KidZania Cities in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore in partnership with
Agility Research, saw over 500 kids interviewed across both Cities in
2017. Participants ranged from 7-15 years old, who talked about
financial literacy, career aspirations, and preferences.
“KidZania
Kuala Lumpur revolves around children - we want to know what they are
thinking, what they find relevant and interesting. Through this survey
and other initiatives such as the KidZania CongreZZ, we give them a
voice and a role in making the experience better for all children,” said
Shahrul Nizar Ahmad, Mayor of KidZania Kuala Lumpur.
The
results revealed that modern kids are well-versed in basic money
management, aspirational in their career choices and appreciative of
their families. Key findings include:
Malaysian Kids Know How to Save… and Spend
Most
children receive a regular allowance and more than three quarters save
money for the future or to buy something special, with almost a third
saving up to buy a new mobile phone, tablet or laptop.
Over
a third of the survey respondents said their experience at KidZania
taught them about savings and expenditure, and 70% choose to deposit
their earnings at the KidZania central bank, instilling an appreciation
for the value of money and teaching money management skills.
Family Bonding and Relationships
While
kids value family time over material goods, almost 50% reported having
less than 2 hours of family time each day. With strong family
relationships being a critical factor for growing children, KidZania
Kuala Lumpur aims to include more parent-child activities and
role-playing establishments to encourage more quality family time.
Hopes & Dreams for the Future
Kids
cited personal interest and their parents as role models being the two
main factors that influence their future career choice. The majority
indicated they desired to be a teacher or doctor, careers which are
familiar through regular exposure; however, they also expressed that
their favourite experience at KidZania involves learning how to do
different jobs, broadening their horizons for the future. Over 80%
reported that they could see a career for themselves in their favourite
role-play experience which, in KidZania Kuala Lumpur, are fire fighter
and pilot.
Almost half the respondents also expressed
their top learning experience included skills such as teamwork (46%) and
independence (47%), reaffirming KidZania’s ‘Learn Life Today’
philosophy and the importance of role-playing as a means to develop
strengths and discover new interests.
